A collaboration between Brno University of Technology and UiA/MatRIC

Project "Mathematical Education Through Modelling Authentic Situations - METMAS" is supported by Norway Grants mechanism, grant number NF-CZ07-ICP-3-201-2015. This support is gratefully acknowledged.

Start of the project: 1.7.2015

End of the project: 30.6.2016

The major aim of the project is to strengthen collaboration between the Czech Republic and Norway by establishing a network of mathematics educators and researchers from Brno University of Technology (BUT) and University of Agder (UiA). The partners collaborate on research and innovations in mathematics and mathematics education at university level with particular emphasis on mathematical modelling and novel techniques of teaching and assessment in mathematics. Collaboration between BUT and UiA is based on the exchange of knowledge and experience in education, research, management and social aspects of academia. All activities within this project are supported by partners┬┤ experience in education, research and management. Special attention is paid to important social aspects including promotion of wider involvement of women in education and science.

Expected project outcomes:

  • Increased and strengthened institutional cooperation at all levels of the education sector
  • New bilateral partnership agreement
  • Joint products and services
  • Further joint projects/programs/modules
  • Promotional events

About our partners in the Czech Republic:

Over a period of more than 110 years Brno University of Technology (BUT) has developed into an internationally recognized institution offering up-to-date education based on the latest scientific and professional knowledge provided by 8 faculties and 2 institutes, Central European Institute of Technology (CEITEC BUT) and institute of Forensic Engineering, covering a broad spectrum of fields ranging from technical and scientific disciplines through economics to the arts. Nowadays, more than 24,000 students are enrolled at BUT. In recognition of quality of educational services offered, BUT has been awarded the European Commission's prestigious ECTS and DS Label certificates for the period 2009-2013.

Mathematics education plays an important role in education of engineers at BUT. Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication guarantees mathematics education for two faculties, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication and Faculty of Information Technology.

CEITEC is a consortium of six partners including the most prominent universities and research institutes in Brno in the Czech Republic. The consortium forms a scientific centre in the fields of life sciences, advanced materials and technologies.Multi-field CEITEC is the first scientific centre in the Czech Republic of this type which integrates research and development in these vastly different scientific fields. CEITEC offers a state-of-the-art infrastructure and superb conditions to employ excellent researchers. It also benefits from the support of the South Moravian Region and Brno City Municipality.

The research dedicated to materials sciences is allocated in two research programmes: "Advanced nanotechnologies and microtechnologies" and "Advanced materials". Mathematical models constitute a growing part of research in the area of material sciences at CEITEC.
